SUPPLIES NEEDED
•Decorator fabric for café curtain
•Coordinating decorator fabric for reverse side of curtain
(note: this fabric will show as the mitered band).
•Pearl cotton or rayon

1. Cut out curtain panels in decorator and contrasting fabrics, wrong sides together, and machine-baste 1 1/2" from edge.

2. Thread the serger with a decorative thread in the upper looper. Serge around the two sides and bottom edge of the curtain with the lining (contrasting) side of the fabric up.

3. Fold rights sides together at the corner, aligning the side and bottom serged edges. Fold the diagonal edge in, aligning all the serged edges.

4. Using the diagonal foldline as a guide, straight-stitch on your sewing machine right next to the fold. Trim to a 3/4" seam allow-ance and press the seam open.

5. Turn the mitered corners right side out and fold the lining (contrasting fabric) to the right side along basting lines; press in place. Topstitch along the edge of the decorative serging and remove the basting.

6. To make a casing in the top of your panel, turn under 1/2" to the wrong side of the cafe and press. Measure and mark a pressing line 1 1/4" from the fold and press along this line. Topstitch close to the fold.

SUPPLIES NEEDED
: (for a 36” window)

Tear-away stabilizer
8 10” squares of white fabric
6 – 5 1/2 “ squares of peach fabric
3 – 5 1/2” squares of blue fabric
2 - 29” x 3” strips of blue fabric
1 – 42” x 3” strip of blue fabric
Lining fabric cut into a triangle 42” x 30” x 30”
Rotary cutter and mat
Rayon thread in a variety of colors
Ruler
Water-soluble marker

1. Back white fabric with stabilizer and hand or machine embroider desired motif in the center of each square. (for machine embroidery, follow your instruction manual for proper embroidery settings). Make a 5 1/2” square template from stabilizer and draw and “X” in the center. Center the template over the embroidery and trace the outer edge; trim along the marked lines.

2. Alternating colored squares and embroidered squares, stitch fabric squares together creating a triangular shape matching the template below.

3. Using a rotary cutter, mat and ruler, trim the top edge of the valance, creating a straight edge. (The top half of each square will be trimmed away). Stitch remaining border strip to the top edge of the valance.

4. With right sides together, stitch one border strip to each side edge of the valance.

5. Stitch lining to valance, right sides together, leaving an opening in one side for turning. Do not stitch through the edges of the top border – this will be the opening for your curtain. To form casing sew two rows of straight stitching 1 1/2” apart in the top border.
